Severe hypototension and cardiac arrest during intravenous administration of protamine sulfate

Abstract

|
Systemic hypotension is commonly observed in association with the administration of protamine for neutralization of circulating heparin. The degree of peripheral vasodilation produced by protamine infusion varies widely and mechanism by which protamine lowers systemic blood pressure is unsettled both from labortories and clinical studies. To treat hemodynamic adverse effects, early detection and prompt management are required. We experienced a case which showed severe hypotension and cardiac arrest transiently during intravenous protamine injection.
